Carolina Biological Exploring Electrophoresis and Forensics Kits

This technically simple experiment simulates the use of DNA in forensic investigations and, in doing so, introduces advanced concepts of PCR and DNA fingerprinting.  Students cast agarose gels, load pre-digested DNA and perform electrophoresis.  They use the banding patterns of the DNA in the gel to compare the DNA fingerprints of two suspects with evidence and victim DNA.  Gels can be run in 45 minutes with five 9V batteries or overnight with one battery.

Apparatus consists of a gel chamber and comb, micro-pipettes and connecting cables.

Materials included are:

  • Agarose and concentrated TBE buffer

  • DNA samples

  • CarolinaBLU™ DNA stain

  • Pipette tips

  • Carbon fibre electrodes.

G3.00 - Teacher Demonstration Kit

The demonstration kit contains fully illustrated instructions, one set of apparatus and sufficient materials for two demonstrations.

G3.00CK - Classroom Activity Kit

The classroom activity kit contains fully illustrated instructions, five sets of apparatus and sufficient materials for ten experiments.

G3.00CK-RK - Classroom Refill Kit

The classroom refill kit contains replacement materials that can be used with the apparatus in G3.00 or G3.00CK.  There are sufficient materials for ten experiments.
