Short nosed echidna

Tachyglossus aculeatus

The short-nosed echidna, native to Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea, is a primitive mammal belonging to the order Monotremata.  This species, along with the long-nosed echidna and platypus, are the only three egg-laying mammals alive today.  Echidnas are insectivores and use their long sticky tongue to lap their prey from holes.
