  Maize seeds, waxy and non-waxy

S4.1  Maize, waxy (100 seeds)

S4.2  Maize, non-waxy (100 seeds)

These seeds are used to test for the presence of starch in the seeds as part of a discussion about inheritance of characteristics.

File away the outer seed coat to reveal the inner food reserves, but avoid filing the pale heart-shaped region inside the seeds.  Blow away any dust left after filing.  Use a fine-tipped pasteur pipette to add a drop of dilute (0.01N) I2/KI solution to the exposed inner surface.  After 30 seconds, blot away excess solution.  The waxy seeds should stain grey whilst the non-waxy seeds should stain black.

NOTE:  S4.1 and S4.2 are not regarded as suitable for germination.  We suggest product code S26 (pack of 50 viable corn seeds) if you would like to grow corn.
